For the cake:

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the topping:

  • ½ cup butter (melted)
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 cups mini marshmallows
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. Prepare the Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, water, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix using an electric mixer or whisk until the batter is smooth.
  3. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes. Use a toothpick to check for doneness; it should come out clean when inserted into the center.
  4. Prepare the Topping: While the cake bakes, melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat. Stir in milk and cocoa powder until smooth and well combined.
  5. Add Chocolate Chips: Once the cake is baked, sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the top. Return the cake to the oven for 2-3 minutes to melt the chips. Spread the melted chocolate evenly with a spatula.
  6. Add Marshmallows & Nuts: Sprinkle mini marshmallows and chopped walnuts (if using) over the melted chocolate.
  7. Finish Baking: Bake for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the marshmallows turn golden brown and puff up.
  8. Cool & Serve: Let the cake cool for at least 15-20 minutes before serving. Slice and enjoy!
